About The Books Stack

The Books Stack is an independent editorial project that reviews the software freelancers and small businesses use to send invoices, keep their books and handle tax. We are not any of the tools listed, and we don’t provide accounting services ourselves — we point you to the tools and explain what each is for.

How we choose what to list

We start from a broad shortlist and open every tool’s live site by hand before it goes on the list. That check matters: it regularly catches catalog name-collisions — a product that shares a name but turns out to be something entirely unrelated to accounting & invoicing tools. Only tools whose live product matches the category make it in; what we dropped and why is listed on the homepage.

How we make money

The outbound links are affiliate links: if you sign up with a platform after clicking through, we may earn a referral fee. That never changes what makes the list or how tools are grouped — selection is based on what the product actually does, not on any referral arrangement. Every affiliate link is marked nofollow sponsored.

Independence & accuracy

Descriptions are based on each platform’s own public positioning, checked live on 2026-07-17. Where a site blocked our live check, we say so on the card rather than guess. If something is out of date or wrong, tell us and we’ll fix it.
